They are different minerals
Sapphire is the gem variety of corundum, while spinel is a separate mineral species with a different chemical composition and crystal structure. Similar colours can make them look related, but they should not be identified by colour alone.
Appearance and colour
Both can occur in attractive blue, pink, purple and other colours. Colour quality varies from stone to stone and should be assessed under suitable lighting. Photographs can help, but screen settings and lighting conditions can change the appearance.
Durability and jewellery use
Both minerals are used in jewellery. Design, setting protection, cut, inclusions, size and intended wear should be considered for each individual gemstone. A professional jeweller should examine a loose stone before it is set.
Treatment and documentation
Heat treatment is commonly associated with sapphire and should be disclosed. Spinel is often sold without treatment, but treatment status should still be based on reliable information or laboratory testing rather than assumption.
How to choose
- Confirm the gem identity.
- Compare colour in more than one lighting condition.
- Review clarity, cut and condition.
- Ask for treatment disclosure.
- Use a laboratory report for important identity, treatment or origin claims.
- Choose the stone that best suits the design and budget.
