What a gemstone report can tell you
A gemmological report may record the tested item’s identity, variety, weight, measurements, shape and cutting style, colour, treatment observations and, for some report services, an opinion on geographic origin.
Check these fields first
- Report number and date: use the laboratory’s verification service where available.
- Identification: confirm the mineral species and stated variety.
- Weight and measurements: compare them with the gemstone and seller information.
- Shape and cutting style: confirm that the report describes the same item.
- Treatment comments: read the exact wording rather than relying on a sales summary.
- Origin opinion: check whether origin testing was included and remember that origin is a laboratory opinion based on available evidence.
A report is not a price guarantee. It does not replace your assessment of colour, cut, transparency, condition, suitability for setting, seller terms and overall value.
Before completing a purchase
- Verify the report number on the laboratory website when possible.
- Compare the report photograph, dimensions and weight with the offered stone.
- Ask whether the original report will be supplied.
- Check for damage or alteration after the report date.
- Ask who pays for additional testing if verification is required.
